I am a musician and I live in Chile (South America). Although my contry is very far from India, since I was a child I have been always intereted in the Indian Culture, Ashtanga Yoga (Sri Patthabi Jois Vinyasa System, which I practice), Ayurveda and its amazing music (Ravi Shankar, Anoushka Shankar, Shakti/Remember Shakti, etc.).

Nowadays I am planning to buy a sitar. I would like to buy a good instrument and I am analizing the alternatives here in Chile, but also the convenience of buying it directely from India(as I have plans to visit this country at the end of 2014 or early 2015). I do not know if you could help me or advise me in this matter, but I prefer to ask.

One of the sitars that I have found in the Chilean market, is a “Kartar Chand” sitar, vilayat kan style. It is approximately 15 years old and it has been used by its only owner (http://articulo.mercadolibre.cl/MLC-418491052-sitar-de-la-india-kartar-chand-_JM).

What do you think about this instrument and model? Do you think that it is convenient to buy it in Chile (e.g., a product as the one that I indicated before), or is it too risky? Do you recommend me to talk to someone directly in India or other country where the specific sitar company has distributor offices?

I would be very grateful if you could give me your opinion about this issue.

Thank you very much in advance for your help.

Kind regards.

The one and only who really knows how to make a sitar in this family’s tradition is Kartar Chand Dhiman. But also he has nowadays completely turned over towards the prefab Calcutta-body assembling method…

Concerning the sarangi, I cannot remember that Kartar Chand Sharma has ever build a sarangi. Or at least not a series of sarangis… But I have to admit that I have not put this question to Hari Chand in detail neither. The repair of sarangis is a different matter, since most of the basic building techniques and used materials are the same. They have been making sarods and dilrubas…
